Private Instruction

Times: to be arranged with your teacher.  Lessons will occur weekly and/or bi weekly for 30 minutes or an hour, according to your preference.  45 minute lessons can also be scheduled.

Fees: 17$ per half hour, 34$ per hour


Pre-Bop 

Instructor: Heather Perkins

Interactive music class for toddlers where they will explore the sounds and wonder of making music.

Class Time: 1030-1130 on Thursdays.  On going class from Spring.

Basic Music Through Drumming

For students who intend to take an instrument in the fall or for those who want to learn basic musicianship without having to take an instrument.

Beginning Improvisation

Musical Theater Summer Camp (at MVCC Theater in Rome)

Instructor: Heather Perkins

Have you ever dreamed of performing on stage.  Join us this summer as we are looking for students ages 8-15 who are interested in acting, dancing, and singing!  No prior experience necessary.  We will work on vocal technique, characterization and projection in acting, staging, and technical aspects of theatre.  This camp will feature a live final performance on Friday, August 8th at MVCC Rome Campus Theater.

Class time: Monday- Thursday, 8am-3pm

Dates: 7/14/08 - 8/7/08, Final Performance 8/8/08 at MVCC Theater in Rome

Fees: $175 for "Y" member, $190 for non member

Drumming 101

Instructor: Corey Colmey

Objective:  To give students an intense overview of concepts on how to become a great drummer.  This class will include the study of basic technique, sound, rudiments, basic drumset beats and fills, reading, and the study of pulse.  Each student should have a  practice pad, sticks, and a metronome.  Drumsets are highly recommended.  Percussionists and non percussionists welcome. Private lessons are HIGHLY recommended while taking this course. Gary’s Music provides discounted drums and materials to registered students of this class.

The Improv Ensemble

Instructor: Corey Colmey

A non traditional ensemble focused on the art of pure improvisation. Students will strengthen their ability to create, respond, and perform on their instrument through constant reworking of their own ideas.  No reading, just improvising, week after week.  All musicians welcome.  Private lessons are HIGHLY recommended in between sessions!

Caribbean Steel Drumming

Come learn to play the steel drums in a relaxed fun environment with no musical experience necessary.  This class covers the basics of steel drumming, while learning a variety of popular songs.

Composer’s Workshop

Instructor: Corey Colmey

An ensemble based on performing original compositions of its participants.  Students will learn basic compositional techniques, and will compose one original piece of music, idea, or arrangement by the end of the semester which will be performed and recorded.

Class time: Tuesdays 2-3

Beginner African Drumming (this class takes place at Pinti Field Pavillion)

Instructor: Corey Colmey

This class is open to all beginners of hand percussion, and focuses on the indigenous drumming styles of West Africa. Concepts covered include basic djembe techniques including tone, bass, slap and muffle strokes, instruction on various rhythms of the Ewe people, ensemble playing, call and response, improvisation, basic singing, the role of rhythms in African societies, and introduction to other percussive instruments including the bell, shaker, karimba. Private instruction is highly recommended in conjunction with this class to achieve optimal results.  You should bring your own drum to every class, or be prepared to purchase one soon after classes have begun for home practice.  Gary’s Music supplies special discounted drums available to registered students of the class.

Rock Ensemble

Instructor: Corey Colmey

This popular ensemble focuses on playing in a rock band.  Slots are open to ALL instrumentalists.  Concepts covered include learning to perform in various styles of rock music such as classic rock of the 60s-70s, modern rock, punk, funk, blues, jazz and more.  Students will also learn how to understand their role in a group situation.  Each band will have an opportunity to write original material.  At the conclusion of this course, each band will perform live at a venue in front of an audience, and possibility of studio recording time. Students must own their own instrument and practice in between classes. Private lessons with a qualified teacher are highly encouraged  to participate in this course.  Equipment for all instrumentalists is available at a discount to registered students of the class through Gary’s Music.

Percussion Ensemble

Instructor: Corey Colmey

Rehearse and Perform conventional and non-conventional percussion music in a group setting.  All musicians welcome.  Percussionists highly encouraged.  In this course, you will learn how to find your niche within a percussion section, and develop your feel, time, and sensitivity toward all types of music. All participants will perform in the end of the semester concert.

Piano Lab (for kids)

This is the perfect course for the beginner piano student, and is equal parts fun and learning. Concepts covered include technique, reading, theory, composition and performance.
